A summary of the Academy of Finland's autumn calls
With the increase in the Academy's budget authority, the Academy will open supplementary funding calls
In addition to Academy’s traditional September calls and the call for the Centres of excellence, the following calls will be open for applications in September:
- Finnish Flagship programme call, in which the funding will be targeted towards competence clusters operating in a strong innovation-oriented environment and having active collaborations with the business sector and possibly with other sectors of society. The University of Oulu's flagship application proposals have been requested to be sent by 29 June for internal selection. The rectors will select the proposal(s) for which applications will be prepared in the beginning of July.
- The aim of the FIRI research infrastructures as co-operation platforms call is to strengthen and develop the extensive and diverse utilization of research infrastructures and to support the construction of competence centers. However, in order to receive funding, the applicant must have previous and verifiable co-operation with at least one co-operation representative of the business community. The Academy of Finland requires all applicant organisations to prioritise their applications. In the University of Oulu the prioritization will be done in two phases.
- The special funding for RDI partnership networks aims to support and promote the networking of higher education institutions and government research institutes with the business sector in order to boost the societal impact of high-quality research.
The three calls will be open from 11 August to 2 September 2020.
A call will also open for research into crisis preparedness and security of supply in mid-August. The call will close in mid-September. The aim of the call is to provide extensive funding for multidisciplinary research related to the call themes that will be specified during the summer through discussions with stakeholders.
FUNDING CALLS FOR CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION AND MITIGATION RESEARCH AND FINNISH-NORWEGIAN TECHNOLOGY PROJECTS
Two additional funding calls will be opened in connection with the September calls: for system-level research into climate change mitigation and adaptation and for Finnish-Norwegian research cooperation in engineering.
The Climate Change call will provide funding to research in which research consortia examine the whole of several subsystems (e.g. food, transport, energy, community systems) and interdependencies between the systems in terms of mitigation of and/or adaptation to climate change. The research may also focus comprehensively on a single subsystem. The Academy of Finland will organise an info webinar on the climate change call on 17th August from 12.00 to 13:00. The registration is open until Friday 14th August.
Finnish-Norwegian co-operation applications must cover one or several of the following fields of engineering: energy engineering, mechanical engineering and manufacturing technology, medical engineering, process and chemical engineering, construction and municipal engineering, electrical engineering and electronics (incl. communications and automation engineering), environmental engineering related to the above fields.
If an applicant applies for funding from the above-mentioned calls and another Academy call that is open for application in September (e.g. Academy Project call), the applicant shall submit different applications with different research plans to the calls.
